Why do DragonBox games require "Photo / Media / Files" ?

DragonBox games do not access your Photo / Media.

Google has implemented Simplified permissions on Google Play and this may cause you to believe that our games access your Photo/Media when they don't.

In fact, as stated above, our games need to access the external storage, to install itself properly. And this is why: Google Play currently requires APK to be smaller than 50M. To work around this, it allows developers to implement expansion packs, which may be downloaded into the external storage. For this to work, one needs to enable the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.

Why do DragonBox games require "Full Internet Access" permission?

These permissions are required because:

  • anonymous usage information is reported online. We use the data to identify how the gamers use the game in order to improve the game further.
  • our integrated crash reporter reports anonymous crash in case the application behaves unexpectedly
  • we allow the user to post to facebook
  • the ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE permission is used to avoid using the internet when it isn't available.
In the future, other features, like purchase in app, social network integration, game leaderboards, etc might require the same permissions.

Note: you will be able to play the game without access to the Internet.

We've been asked to add an option to disable the sending of anynomous data (http://dragonbox.uservoice.com/forums/166049-general/suggestions/3135807-make-the-sending-of-anonymous-game-data-optional) and are considering it. Please vote for/comment on the issue if you feel strongly about it.

For people who do not want to send this information to us with the current version, 3 solutions are available:

  • cut your internet while playing (then exit the game before reenabling it, otherwise the information is buffered)
  • use a kid oriented sandbox like famigo sandbox
  • for the more technically advanced, use a ROM that allows more fine-grained control on the permissions (like cyanogemod).
